The Festival
- Historically, Provincetown has never been for the straight and narrow, and it has been a haven for artists and the queer community for over a century.
- During the roaring ’20s, the town was considered “the most artistic place in the world”. Tennessee Williams wrote A Streetcar Named Desire in the Atlantic House.
- In 1965, Nina Simone performed in town during a visit with her friend Bob Thompson (a short-lived yet accomplished black painter.)
- A riot broke out in front of Spiritus Pizza in 1990 over the arrest of a local drag queen, Vanilla. Let’s just say it involved…. flying pizzas, ice-cream cones, a golden plunger, and stilettos going through the back window of a cop car.
- Washashore embraces this history and presents a music and arts festival like nothing you’ve attended!
