Stroll beneath Forsyth Park’s Spanish moss-draped live oaks and admire at amazing chalk art at Savanna’s annual SCAD, the Sidewalk Arts Festival.
- Visiting Savannah soon? Stay close to the city’s top attractions and gay-friendly venues at the River Street Inn, a 4 star hotel rated “Fabulous” by guests with a range of services to guest including a candy bar, nightly treats made by Savannah’s Candy Kitchen, and guest bicycles. It’s also located right next to the water making accessing the river front a breeze.
The Festival
- Be amazed at the artistic talent of Savannah College of Art & Design students and alumni as they skillfully create sidewalk masterpieces with chalk. Individuals and team compete to win prizes of up to $1,500.
- In addition to the sidewalk art, visitors can also see the art of tableaux vivants, or “living pictures” in which actors and models will silently depict a scene as if in a photo.
- The event draws thousands of visitors to the city over the weekend. Last year more than 1,000 students, perspective students and alumni drew on more than 800 sidewalk squared in the park.
- The park also hosts a food truck festival with bars and a live entertainment stage featuring top performers. The event is part of the SCAD weekend.
The Venue
- Forsyth Park is a majestic 30-acre park named for Georgia’s 33rd governor. The park is bordered by Gaston Street on the North, Drayton Street on the East, Park Avenue on the South and Whitaker Street on the West.
- The city’s most most famous fountain—installed in 1858 and modeled after the fountains at the Place de la Concorde in Paris—crowns the northern edge of the park, inspiring contemplation and selfies, proposals, weddings and artists!
- When you visit Forsyth Park, you may want to stop at The Sentient Bean for a cup of coffee, Brighter Day Natural Foods for a fresh, organic lunch, or Local 11ten for dinner in the vault of a former bank and a unique rooftop bar among the trees.
